On a plot of land nestled between a grouping of tall trees and a silent lake sits a town unlike any other around it. Scantily-clad women linger outside on the cobblestone streets, and gallows sit inside a traditional town square. The year might be 2015, but on the set of “Salem,” it still feels like its 1692.

For the WGN America series, Shreveport, LA doubles for the Massachusetts town of Salem, and it’s easy to get immersed in the world. When Zap2it visited the set in March, an old, worn man sitting on the steps of a small church greeted us by saying in a rough voice, “Welcome to Salem, we have a ball down here.”

When it comes to “Salem”s’ interior and exterior sets, what you see is what you get. Mary Sibley’s house? It’s just as purple in real life. That pub John is always drinking at? There’s a fire crackling in the corner of the room. And what about Cotton Mather’s heavenly home? Pews and pews for everyone.

Take a look below at Zap2it’s behind-the-scenes photos of the series’ wicked exterior set to find out what the 17th century is really like, “Salem” style.
