NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FL - Nothing ruins a day out on the waves quite like a shark attack.
On Sunday, 12-year-old Cole Toomsoo and a 14-year-old friend were out on the water off New Smyrna Beach, Fla., when they got an unfriendly visit from a 5-foot-long black tip shark. The shark bit Toomsoo's friend's hand, leaving a gaping hole. The would-be shark snack fought back, punching it to get away.
"I thought he was coming to get us and stuff and then his hand was all red, he was screaming for help," said Toomsoo.
When the teen got to the beach, other surfers rushed to help. They got him to the hospital and into surgery, then went right back in the water.
"I'm not really scared about sharks," said Toomsoo.
Fellow surfer Nick Anselmo echoed that, saying, "We see sharks all the time as a surfer can't think about it."
Guess the whole "once bitten, twice shy" saying doesn't apply to surfers.
