With Season 2 premiering in just mere hours, let’s take a look back at the season that started it all and created a worldwide phenomenon!
In Season 1, it was all about Barry learning to how control his new-found super-speed, using them for the better of mankind and for serving justice and most importantly, finding the man who killed his mother those years ago when he was a child.
During the explosive particle accelerator accident at S.T.A.R. Labs, CCPD forensic scientist Barry Allen was in his own lab working when, all of the sudden, a powerful lightning bolt crashes through the roof window and strikes Barry point blank, sending him flying and rendered him unconscious for months on end.
After finally awakening from his coma at S.T.A.R. Labs, Barry comes to realize that he can see things at a super slow rate, being that he was actually moving faster than everyone else, and that he began speeding up at times he didn’t mean to.
Discovering that the particle accelerator explosion affected other people besides himself, Barry sets out to find these other “meta-humans” and brings them back to S.T.A.R. Labs to keep in containment until a cure is found.
It’s after his first encounter with Clyde Mardon, a bank robber, that Barry makes the decision to become a crime-fighting superhero only known as the Flash!
Discovering new rogues throughout his journey such as Captain Cold, Heatwave, the Pied Piper, the Trickster, Gorilla Grodd and even his own superhero partner, the Arrow, Barry quickly (no pun intended) became fully aware of his abilities and how to trigger their maximum potential when the time calls for it.
It’s only after a while that Barry finally meets again with his true nemesis, the Man in the Yellow Suit, or better known as the Reverse Flash.
After being defeated in battle by the Reverse Flash at the halfway point of the first season, it becomes clear to Barry that he cannot defeat him on his own. So, Barry begins to train harder than he ever had to before. His goal? To become the fastest man alive.
So, for the next few months, Barry kept on trying to break his own running record until one day, during a crisis caused by the Weather Wizard, Barry breaks the time barrier and travels back a day in the past. This causes a stir up between what’s happening in the present day and the future. Knowing now the true extent of his powers, Barry decides to go back in time fully to the night his mother was murdered and save her from the Reverse Flash.
Speaking of which, the Reverse Flash was always speculated by fans to be Eddie Thawne, Joe West’s work partner, being that his last name was Thawne much like in the comics. However, things went awry and a plot twist soon emerged.
During the day of Weather Wizard’s destruction on Central City, Barry’s friend at S.T.A.R. Labs, Cisco, discovered that Dr. Harrison Wells was truly from the future and revealed to be none other than Eobard Thawne. Dr. Wells told the truth in its entirety and then proceeded to kill Cisco. Thank goodness Barry traveled back in the time so that never actually happened.
However, Cisco begins to have visions of the alternate reality where he is killed and has the team secretly tap into his psyche and discovers the truth that Dr. Wells has been the Reverse Flash all along.
Team Flash bands together in an attempt to take down the Reverse Flash, only to have Eddie Thawne be taken away and held captive by Dr. Wells.
This called for some major backup. So, the Flash enlists the help of his friend, Oliver Queen, also known as the Arrow, and former S.T.A.R. Labs employee-turned-meta-human, Ronnie, now known as Firestorm.
The three heroes teamed up in an epic showdown against the Reverse Flash and come out victorious. Capturing the villain in the process.
After sharing his secrets with Barry inside of his cell, Dr. Wells offers his help to aid in saving Barry’s mother by properly opening up a time portal for which the Flash could travel through to that night in exchange for allowing Dr. Wells to return back to his original time.
Barry succeeds in reaching back to the past, but ultimately decides not to save his mother and instead goes back to his time to stop the Reverse Flash entirely for making his life suffer the way it has. The two speedsters fight it out inside the reactor at S.T.A.R. Labs and the fight abruptly comes to a screeching halt when Eddie Thawne, knowing that he is Dr. Wells’ ancestor, shoots himself in the heart, killing him in the process and thus ending the terror of the Reverse Flash.
With the particle accelerator still about to explode, a wormhole has opened up above Central City, causing mass destruction. And Barry ever being the hero we know and love, races up to the top of the wormhole in an attempt to stop it, giving us the biggest cliffhanger ever.
Well, the time has come ladies and gentlemen! Tonight is the night that we’ve all been waiting for!
It’s time for Season 2 of The Flash!
So, strap in tight, because we’re about to go on a race of a lifetime!
