WASHINGTON, D.C. - One dollar for the guys and 79¢ for the ladies. Sounds like a ripoff, right? It's Equal Pay Day, folks, the day to think and protest the lack thereof.
Why April 12? It's the day women would finally make the same amount of money men earned last year. To add insult to injury, minority women on average have a much worse deal.
Under #EqualPay, celebrities and regular folks are raising their voices on social media against discrimination. Tuesday morning, President Barack Obama designated a new national monument to honor the movement for women's equality.
"Equal pay for equal work should be a fundamental principle of our economy," expressed the President at the former Sewall-Belmont House and Museum.
Meanwhile, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton joined the women's national soccer team at an event in New York to talk about equal pay and kick some balls.
"We cheered when they won the World Cup and we cheered when they won the Olympic gold medal, and we noticed that our men's team hasn't yet done that," she joked. "Yet somehow the men are making hundreds of thousands of dollars more than the women."
The fight will continue until equal pay day is moved to December 31. That day we'll all go out for a drink… and guess who's covering the first round?
