RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC - Four new chemical elements with atomic numbers 113, 115, 117 and 118, are being given names to the Periodic Table of the Elements.
Nihonium (Nh) 113, Moscovium (Mc) 115, Tennessine (Ts) 117, Oganesson (Og) 118
Nihonium is named for for Nippon, or Japan in English. Moscovium for Moscow, Russia, Oganesson comes from Yuri Oganessian, an 83-year-old Russian nuclear physicist.
You don't have to be a chemist to know that Tennessine comes from Tennessee. Researchers from Vanderbilt University had a lot to do with that name claim.
The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) will confirm the names in November.
