Study: Mediterranean diet better for heart than statins

For those worried about heart disease, a new study shows there’s a prescription that’s super effective at keeping your ticker ticking.

And no, we’re not talking medication, we’re talking Mediterranean.

That’s right – the research shows that sticking to a Mediterranean style diet cuts the chances of an early death by 19 percent compared to those eating red meat and taking drugs like statins.

Looks like medicine has never tasted so good.

“In my experience, I’ve lived here and I’ve lived in Greece, and nobody eats processed foods over there. From the meat, to the fish, to the vegetables – everything is fresh and it’s the type of food you’d get out of your garden.” Commented Thomas Karnezis, the owner of Greek restaurant, Alexander the Great.

The Mediterranean diet, which consists of vegetables, fish, fruits, nuts, whole grains, and, of course, olive oil is packed full of antioxidants and good fats – and is said by some to be a great option for weight loss.

“The food I grew up with – it’s all fresh and no additives of any kind.” Added Karnezis.

But don’t throw away your pill bottles just yet – doctors are saying that for people who need statins, the best thing to do is combine a healthier diet like this with medication.

Make sure you consult with your doctor and maybe a little old Greek lady before you switch to this tastier, healthier new life style.
