MIAMI — Mosquitoes are the worst! Florida's been fighting' the Zika-carrying pests for months, and finally, a 'win' in Wynwood. Governor Rick Scott announced Monday that the artsy Miami neighborhood has had no local transmission of Zika for 45 days straight. It gets better. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lifted its travel warning for that area of Miami.
"Everybody should be coming back here and enjoy themselves," Gov. Scott said.
Even though the travel ban is lifted, the CDC is still advising tourists and locals to avoid skeeter bites in all of Miami-Dade County. As you've probably heard, the Zika virus is nothing to sneeze at. It can cause serious birth defects if pregnant women are infected.
Meanwhile, Congress has yet to pass a bill that will provide money to fight the virus.
"The federal government is not being a great partner," said Gov. Scott. "They need to become a better partner. We need a bill passed out of Congress."
Governor Scott has allocated over $36 million of the state budget to zap Zika, but a whole lot more is needed if we want to get rid of it for good.
