Arrow fans were happy to see that Sara Lance has made her way back into the superhero scene when they got a first glimpse of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. And please believe, we were just as happy to see her, too!

Now, we all know Sara from Arrow and her past with the League of Assassins, her time fighting alongside Oliver as the Arrow and her tragic murder that led to her sister, Laurel, into taking up the mantle of the Black Canary. But how much do we really know about her past stories?

For starters, Sara was never an actual alter ego of the Black Canary. The very first Black Canary was named Dinah Drake, a crime-fighter who took on criminals with Gotham City detective Larry Lance, her love interest and eventual husband.

It was down the road that DC Comics had decided to create a second Black Canary to fight alongside Dinah Drake. That second Black Canary was her daughter, Dinah Laurel Lance. Sound familiar?

However, over time, Laurel’s depiction of Black Canary had become so popular, DC Comics had decided that they would focus on her more than her mother and give her the “Canary Cry” as a superpower due to a genetic mutation.

And after becoming a part of the Justice League, she meets Oliver Queen, the Green Arrow. Initially, they didn’t become immediate love interests. As a matter of fact, they disliked each other strongly at first. It was only over time that the two heroes would grow feelings for each other, despite the age difference.

Now that we’ve discussed her comic book history, let’s go into what most of us already know, her live-action history.

Canary has made appearances in NBC’s Legends of the Superheroes episodes and had her own stint in Smallville as an assassin who is recruited for Green Arrow’s team.

It wasn’t until we met Sara Lance, sister of Dinah Laurel Lance, in Arrow that we began to further understand her character.

A former member of the League of Assassins, Sara Lance took on the identity as the Black Canary when she returned to Starling City after her time with Oliver on the “hellish” island. She had become a crime-fighting vigilante that would become a great partner with the Arrow until his fight with Deathstroke and his army. She had made the decision that it would be best for everyone, including her family, if she were to disappear for a while. She left her Canary jacket with Laurel shortly before her departure.

However, tragedy would strike when Sara was murdered by Malcolm Merlyn as a means to escape Ra’s Al Ghul’s wrath. This would leave Laurel no other choice than to continue where Sara had left off in her crime-fighting.

It took Laurel some time to even get into fighting shape. She was never a warrior like her sister was. She was only an attorney during this whole story. So, for Laurel to get into the fighting shape that we all see her as now, it took a lot of patience and many beatings from criminals for her to fully encompass the entity that is the Black Canary.

As for DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Sara is back with a vengeance and with a new look! After a dip into the Lazarus Pit (above), Sara is reborn and ready to fight evil once again as the White Canary when she joins the rest of our heroes to take down Vandal Savage in a war to save the future and all of humanity as we know it.

Question is, will this be the same Sara we all know and love? Or will the Lazarus Pit have an effect on her that may have altered her personality?

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow premieres in 2016 on SFL-TV, the CW!
